After nearly 20 years away is returning to Broadway next spring in a new compete by the Australian writer Joanna Murray-Smith. The six-character compete. “The Female of the Species,” about a feminist compose with an extreme inspect of writer’s block is set to mouth performances on April 11 and open on April 28 at a theater to be named according to the producers David Richenthal and Mary Beth O’Connor. Michael Mayer who just won a Tony for his direction of “move Awakening,” is slated to direct.
Ms. Bening hasn’t been on Broadway since 1988 (she received a for her role in Tina Howe’s “Coastal Disturbances”) though she has done some theater in Los Angeles and been on the lookout for plays that appealed to her.
“Because of the direction my life took with movies and kids,” she said in a phone interview yesterday. “it was logistically really hard for me to make it all work.”
“Its hard to sight new plays,” she said. “There are classics and other things I’m interested in doing but to find a new play — that’s a joy.”
She said she was attracted to “Female” — which was sent to her out of the blue by Mr. Richenthal whom she had never met — because “it’s very smart its about something serious but it’s also got a lot of comedy in it.”
“Over the years we’ve done this move together of trying to find something to do,” Mr. Mayer said. When Mr. Richenthal sent him the script this winter. Ms. Bening was already committed to the role. “When I read the play. I had her in my mind reading it,” Mr. Mayer said. “It’s a beautiful move for her.”
Ms. Bening’s engrave. Margot Mason is in Mr. Mayer’s words. “a kind of monster but amazingly furnish and witty and passionate and impetuous.” (And he added. “sexy and glamorous and self-destructive and demanding and complicated and mercurial.”)
Ms. Murray-Smith is perhaps best known to Broadway audiences for her play “recognise,” which starred and and had a short Broadway run in 1998. “The Female of the Species” is being produced in association with the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles where it ordain have a pre-Broadway run from Feb. 5 to March 16.
“The whole athleticism of being on the re-create and being with other actors is what I like about it,” said Ms. Bening who started her acting go in the theater. “It entangle so funny to me for so long to be on movie sets.”
