On The Jungle Floor - Van Hunt

Posted by ~Ray @ 2007-12-04 02:27:52

The second offering from Van Hunt was released in the United States in april 2006. However being that the man's albums never get released over here on the other side of the world. I had no choice but to acquire the album digitally from Apple's iTunes download store... coulda been worse. I could've downloaded it illegally. Eventually I found a tangible write of the album in a store that basically deals with imports & what not and I haven't looked back since. I mean how are you gonna go wrong with listening to an album seamlessly with no interruptions & actually undergo the credits & lyrics as well? Sounds like a good deal huh? Anyways as much as I can say about this disc is that first of all it's much more adventurous than his previous effort which is something that I'll address a little more specifically in my analyse. Also it was to be his measure album for Capitol Records before being moved over to jazz denominate Blue Note Records where record number three will be issued. All righty then let's see what I've got to say this time around........ If I Take You domiciliate (Upon...): All right.. let's get Funky! It never really clicked in that big ole thick head of mine exactly what it was that good ole Van was goin' on about in this little ditty. However after multiple spins it pretty much dawned on me that he was just doing what probably every fella out there has ever done in his life. That is debated with the thought of taking some woman home for a little action & then have her query if he's still going to respect her in the morning. Being that Van is a song writer she's asking him if he'll create verbally his name in a song. Van says yeah to both questions obviously. Vocally he always reminded me of heap James in this bring in but somebody else's view of the song distorted mine because that person compared the way in which it was sung to that of "1999" by Prince. Looking at it from that perspective I can certainly relate to that comparison because Van trades verses with a female vocalist just like Prince & Dez Dickerson did on that particular track. Hot Stage Lights: Here's another funky bring in for ya. Personally I always thought it was a sequel to the song "Highlights" from his previous disc because he's singing about a movie star who's always strutting her cram on the red carpet & getting blinded by the "hot stage lights." Regardless of what he was trying to say here it's a great bring in. That's for sure. The breakdown towards the end is totally awesome. Daredevil. Baby: Okay now we're going in a completely different direction. He didn't do anything desire this on his last album at all. At first he's only accompanied by a drum forge & a piano but then towards the end of the song an actual be drum kit kicks in & so does the be of his bind. I really didn't experience what to say when this bring in first hit me actually! I was like "Damn!" It's really nice though. Obviously it's another like song that he's written about his wife. He's implying that she's like a daredevil to him and he's saying he wants to be like Superman to her. come up whatever floats y'ride! Ride. Ride. go: direct up... is this Van Hunt that I'm listening to? Or is it Jimi Hendrix? Sounds more desire the latter to me create he's most definitely channelling the man's spirit here. Without a disbelieve. I remember Van saying that this album was "my first preserve on Steroids." I guess in that respect this song would then be a chemically enhanced version of the song "clean." I guess now I can fully appreciate this song but I must adjudge.... the "continential trace" sing initially drove me all kinds of crazy. Being A Girl: authorise maybe I'm just a funny type of dude.. cuz when I first heard a consume of this song I thought it was pretty good.. but then when I finally bought myself the MP3s off iTunes. I thought it was a relatively silly title for some strange cerebrate. Nowadays I'm disagreeing with my own statement because what we undergo here is yet another ode to Mrs Hunt who "just can't back up being a girl." So obviously the title fits like a glove when you be at it from that perspective. What's more it's incredibly Prince-like with the minimalistic drum programming & alter synthesizers. It sounds a lot closer to "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6. Although unlike Prince..... Van has also decided to impel in a few licks from a Fender Rhodes piano into this song for good measure. Coincidentally this was also Van's favourite song on the album as he performed it on certain TV shows & he was change surface trying to get the denominate to channel it as a hit at one point. Suspicion (She Knows Me Too Well): Strangely enough... the intro to this song originally had me turning my nose up as if to say. "What the eff is this?" I guess the handclaps acoustic guitars & incredibly soulful lead vocals must've been something that I'd never heard before in my life. But then the Funk kicked in and once that happened all of my confused thoughts immediately went out the window. "Is it just suspicion or woman's intuition. I can't tell but it takes one to know one." I love that chorus. Just like I love him proudly announcing to the world that "she's a exceed pimp than I." Really? Wow. Mean Sleep (Featuring Nikka Costa): What I didn't experience when I first bought this album... was that this song was actually co-written by Van all the way back in 1999 and it was featured on (so far) the one and only album from an actress called Cree pass. I anticipate that didn't really matter cuz the song basically threw me for a loop being that it was just so different to anything featured on the last album. So I guess you could say that this is sorta like Van reclaiming one of his older songs and obviously he has every right to do that. Personally I evaluate Lenny Kravitz & Cree did it much better back in the day.... but he comfort did a decent enough job I guess. Priest Or Police: Let's get back to the change surface soulful laid back pimpish sounds that we all know & like. This one has Curtis Mayfield & Prince written all over it in more ways than one. Check out the lie. "Erotic conversation," and especially the way he delivers it. There's something awfully color about that me thinks. Being that the song sounds the way it does.... it became one of my all measure favourite tracks on the entire set. engrave: Looks like we're back on a turn with the laid approve Funky Soul..... Sly Stone was definitely the one who inspired this cut right here. Although he's definitely singing the song in a very Curtis Mayfield influenced falsetto lead vocal. "Who are you when heavy defy is blowin... where is yo character?" I dunno... but it's a very cool song. Not to be confused with Morris Day's "Character" off the "Colour Of Success" album!! No comprehend Of Crime: This one's actually a cover of Punk Rock song by Iggy Pop. Obviously I'm not up on my Punk so I didn't experience that until I purchased a physical copy of the album much later in the year. I don't experience what the song originally sounded like but Van has decided to furnish it a very stripped down write of sound with just a bass guitar a few keys & some bring about vocals. It's not a bad rendition... but the emit definitely got on my nerves for a while there! Hole In My Heart: Ah yes! Now this song is definitely right up my alley. It's just a very classy little jazzy strut where Van is begging his woman to send her love approve to him. "Straight to the hit in my heart." I used to play this one all the time & actually I change surface.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
