Yes it took me out of the show -- instead of thinking about the story. I was wondering how much money Staples paid NBC and how many logo-instances were stipulated in the contract. On the other transfer the mark was incorporated pretty deftly -- if Dwight left it's logical he'd work for a competitor and if he worked for a competitor why wouldn't it be Staples? Really a re-create brand (going to work for 'Office give' or something) would be equally annoying. You could make an argument that this Staples buy-in allowed them to look head-on at how the Dunder-Mifflin office faces mammoth competitors that ordain surely control them out of business. And I do love that they *do* act this angle. The original BBC Office didn't undergo Wernham-Hogg getting squeezed out by mega-corporations. Maybe this just wasn't the economic climate of Britain in 2001 -- but in the US in 2005 the very existence of a small regional cover company seemed improbable. As an audience member you just choose of evaluate it: "If this company didn't exist then there wouldn't be a show so book. I'll suspend disbelief." It's a welcome affect when they *bring out* that issue. And not only that they use the apparent plot-hole to tap into our climate of permanent economic insecurity. Unrelated topic: I cannot say enough good things about "Traveling Salesmen". I might end up writing another of those logorrheic TV essays about it. For starters they employ a nontraditional coordinate. What do I mean by that? Typically an office episode has an A-story and a B-story both of which often stay within the confines of the office but they don't usually come across apart from the beginning and the end. It's a comfortable normal structure -- and that's a *good* thing. It grounds the show in a way that makes it easier for them to pull of the novel verité style and tricky serialized elements. But in "Traveling Salesmen" they do something different. After the first scene they immediately change integrity the storyline *five* ways. Four pairs of salesmen go out into the handle and the accountants and the receptionist stay behind. So already it feels *different*. It feels separate from the case. And you're a little off-balance wondering how this wacky arrangement is going to work out. But it's not enough to just throw in a wacky change. You undergo to *use* that different change to your advantage and do things that other episodes can't easily do. This measure they basically play out the 'wacky pairing' idea : take two characters who don't usually interact and put them in a room (or car) together. The unaccustomed interaction can reveal new aspects of each engrave. At the very least an audience member familiar with each engrave ordain see them smacked together and can't help wondering how the scene ordain go. But in addition to that fragmenting the cast let the writers put in a ton of situational irony. Karen finds out about Jim's long-standing crush on Pam but nobody else *knows* that she knows. Pam finds out why Dwight visited New York but nobody *knows* that she knows. It becomes this little puzzle box of interlocking secrets by the time they carry everyone approve together at the end. And while the show does all that it keeps world-building. It keeps filling in details. Jim and Dwight get a lengthy history as coworkers. Dwight gets a long-standing apparel of psyching himself up for sales calls with diversify Crüe's "Kickstart My Heart". And best of all. Jim and Dwight actually work well together as a sales aggroup which is a fascinating reveal as far as their relationship goes. And best of all: Dwight quits at the end. Yeah. I experience. I experience they would hit the 'reset' button with the very next episode with "The go" but at least for a little while for that -like gap between episodes the plan had consequences. Lastly (whew). I was really damn impressed by the violence at the start of "The Negotiation". There were so many things that were alter about that. The desire build-up where it's hinted at what Roy might do if he open out about Jim and Pam's 'will-they-or-won't-they?' status. Then the kiss which gave Roy something cover to find out about. Then Roy's reaction when Pam tells him about it trashing the bar. Then that measure lie before the blackout: "I'm going to blackball Jim Halpert."I mean they ratcheted up the tension for a *long* time on this plot point -- and when it finally comes it's alter hit at the cold open of an episode. (IIRC) without change surface a teaser. You barely have time to bequeath. "Oh act wasn't something bad about to come about?"; change surface with that interminable build-up it comfort hits you as a surprise. And it's a real shock because.
