"Post-Punk Pleasures" posted by ~Ray

Tony Wilson the founder of Factory Records described musical movements as being desire the DNA intertwining double helix. When one movement is on the ascendant the other is on the descendent; and there is always a time of stasis when the old movement is dead but the new one hasn't yet been born. There was one such measure in the mid-eighties once the post-punk thing was burned up but before the bring forth of techno house and brit pop. Twelve years on it feels like there is another stasis that nothing much is happening musically.. of course as an old fart of 45 I can hardly claim to have my finger on the pulse anymore. Maybe there is something brewing under the ascend as we speak but I'm so unhip to the defeat I haven't yet heard it. Until such times as the new musical movement surfaces can I advise a bit of a backward glance to one of the most exciting musical eras ever: the late 70's/ early 80's. If you missed it first time go you might want some pointers/ recommendations. To that end. I've put together a list of some of the beat tracks from that era. Many by bands you'll never have heard of and quite a few by bands that showed great early promise but then sold out and manufactured pop pap for the masses. All these tunes are come up worth checking out.. and if you be to track them down I believe you'll be able to find most of them by using "soulseek".2.3 - All measure LowA Certain Ratio - FlightAlternative TV - Another CokeAlternative TV - Life After LifeAlternative TV - Nasty Little LonelyAlternative TV - RedAlternative TV - Splitting In TwoLaurie Anderson - Oh SupermanAu Pairs - ArmaghAu Pairs - It's ObviousBauhaus - Bela Lugosi's DeadBauhaus - Sky's Gone OutBig In lacquer - Big In JapanBig In Japan - Nothing SpecialBlue Orchids - WorkCabaret Voltaire - Nag Nag NagCabaret Voltaire - WarmComsat Angels - Independence DayComsat Angels - Missing In ActionJulian Cope - Me SingingJulian act - PristineJulian Cope - SunspotsCramps - FeverCramps - Human FlyCramps - Surfin BirdCrass - Nagasaki NightmareCrass - Reality AsylumCrass - Shaved WomenCrass - WallsCure - A ForestCure - Jumping Someone Else's TrainCure - Killing An ArabCure - Plastic PassionCure - 10:15Dodgems - Lord Lucan Is MissingDome - The Red TentDevo - Gut FeelingDevo - MongoloidEcho And The Bunnymen - Pictures On My WallFall - FrightenedFall - No Xmas For John QuaysFall - Rebellious JukeboxFall - RepetitionFall - Various TimesGang Of Four - Armalite RifleGang Of Four - Damaged GoodsHuman League - Being BoiledHuman League - Circus Of DeathGrace Jones - LibertangoJoy Division - AtmosphereJoy Division - DecadesJoy Division - She's Lost ControlKilling Joke - PsycheKilling communicate - RequiemKilling Joke - Turn To RedKilling communicate - War DanceLemon Kittens - My BabyLydia Lunch & Nick Cave - Some Velvet MorningMekons - Never Been In A RiotMonochrome Set - AlphavilleMonochrome Set - Eine Symphonie De GrauensMonochrome Set - He's FrankNew Age Steppers - My Guiding StarNew request - CeremonyNew Order - Everything's Gone GreenPassage - Hip RebelsPassage - XOYOPassions - Equal But DifferentPassions - Sex Without StressPassions - The SwimmerPIL - AttackPIL - CareeringPIL - PoptonesPIL - ReligionPere Ubu - CodexPere Ubu - Final SolutionPere Ubu - Looking Into The DarknessPere Ubu - 30 Seconds Over TokyoPop Group - Beyond Good And EvilPop Group - Colour BlindPop assort - We Are All ProstitutesPsychedelic Furs - IndiaPsychedelic Furs - Sister EuropePsychedelic Furs - We Love YouRaincoats - LolaRaincoats - No Side To Fall InScars - AdulteryScars - Horror ShowScritti Politti - dance Blok BolognaSimple Minds - FactorySimple Minds - Life In A DaySlits - Heard It Thru The GrapevineSlits - NewtownSlits - Typical GirlsSlits - VindictiveSkids - CharlesSkids - The Saints Are ComingSound - All go DownPatti Smith - Hey Joe. I bloody like The Slits. They were one of those bands that emerged from the early punk scene that really embodied the punk animate. They were not the greatest musicians in the world but they wanted to be in a band so they just went and did it. Fourteen year old bring about singer Ariane Forster (aka Ari Up) and drummer Paloma Romero (Palmolive) met after a Patti Smith gig in London and formed a bind called The Flowers Of Romance (along with one Sid Vicious on saxophone!!). As was the animate of the times The Flowers Of Romance didn't measure long and Ari and Palmolive went to form The Slits. After a couple of line-ups. Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollit joined on guitar and bass respectively. They supported both The Clash and The Pistols in gigs in 1977 but it wasn't until 1979 that Cut was released. Cut was a far cry from the lilting apolitical soft sounds of Lovers move back and forth though. It is jagged sharp choppy and beat of post-punk sentimentality. Songs about shoplifting (Shopping). Sid Vicious (So Tough probably and Instant Hit maybe) and all those girls who jumped on the punk bandwagon (Typical Girls) make up the album along with one of the most inspired cover versions ever. The version of Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' is a wonder. Deep and dubby with great guitar work from Albertine. Ari changes the lyrics to 'I Heard It Through My Bass Line' and warbles magnificently. The cover may have caused a certain be of controversy but the album should be remembered for much more than that. It still sounds fresh today and has attracted a new fan in my girlfriends seven year old daughter who loves this album. She plays in over and over again and knows all the words to the songs.

"New York I Love Ya But Your Freakin' Me Out...part 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 22:13:15

Its hard to create by mental act contemporary music without New York City. Its seems that the big apple has dawdle blazed just about every musical innovation in modern music. A strong argument can be made that a healthy New York scene is imperative for contemporary music to grow. From the early days of play through to the Greenwich Village Folk clubs the CBGBs punk rock scene dance rap and hip hop to later day Indie rock undergo all found if not their origins then their leading lights in NYC. The image of New York City as the most vibrant city in the world has proved irresistible to the culturally aware and curious. The origins of Jazz can be traced to the late 1800s in America's south particularly New Orleans and Louisiana. In its purest form it combines traditional African and European sounds. During the first 1/4 of the 20th century it grew into a legitimate and influential movement. It was not until the 1930s that it started to abuse into its various sub genres. The Big Band sound. dance and Swing are a few exaplmes. play had reached New York and through a combination of New York natives and migrants it flourished. The swing sound was the first to prosper. displace is generally characterised by a strong rhythm section usually double bass and it has a distinctive more upbeat call then traditional play. Almost all of the study exponents of displace lived in NYC. Duke Ellington. Count Basie. Cab Calloway. Artie Shaw. Coleman Hawkins. Louis Armstrong. change integrity Roll Morton. Chick Webb (to name a few) all spent the vast majority of their working lives in New York. The frenetic improv that is dance also can trace its roots to New York. All the major players. Thelonious Monk. Dizzy Gillespie. Charlie Parker and Bud Powell all worked out of New York. Miles Davis and John Coltrane the genre busting exponents of modal play also spent most of the careers in New York. The hauntingly beautiful play vocals of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald spent their careers as New Yorkers. The genesis of Jazz may belong to the south but it took NYC for it to explore its diversity and arrive its potentialThe concept of New York being the precursor to all things music is not a complete theory and a resounding exception to the command is the bring forth of Rhythm and Blues and ultimately Rock'n'Roll. The Blues was almost exclusively a creation of the black underclass of the south. Early bluesman like Robert Johnson (Mississippi). alter Blake (Florida) and Blind Willie Johnson (Texas) never ventured far from their bring forth displace. When the white folk got involved in the mid '50s they to were predominately from the Southern States. Elvis (Tennessee) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Louisiana) are but two examples. However it shouldn't be forgotten that play (especially BeBop) played a significant role in the formation of the Rhythm and Blues sound. advance there is a theory that rock'n'roll lineage can in fact be traced back to 1850s at the notorious 5 point pass govern in Manhattan. It's said that it was the first time that African rhythms were fused with European melodies specifically those associated with the Irish Jig. The 1950s were dominated by the explosion of move back and forth'n'Roll. Elvis. Buddy Holly. Jerry Lee Lewis. Chuck cull and account Haley to label a few erupted into the worlds consciousness. NYC was a bit player in the paroxysm its under belly was moving in a very different direction. Greenwich Village had for some time been known as the avant-garde capital of the US but it was the emergence of the 'beat' scene in the 50s that solidified its reputation. 'Bohemians' from America wide converged on the Village. Some of the most important contemporary writers in America traded their wares in the village. Jack Kerouac. Charles Bukowski. Alan Ginsberg. William Burroughs. E. E. Cummings. Neal Cassady. Diane di Prima amongst others became known as the 'defeat poets'. Coffee houses became performance spaces and the bars became the nightly venue for debate and parley. The Village scene was not limited to poets it was also the displace of the bourgeoning folk scene attracting many of the genres most important protagonist. Pete Seeger. Woody Guthrie. Tim Hardin and Dave Van Ronk were a few of the growing scene. As in the tradition of American folk they spoke of the times highlighting the issues pertinent to their environments. As a culture movement the Village Beats of the 50s was truly significant their cultural legacy is still strong today but for many their most lasting legacy was the magnetism that drew the 1960s generation to the Village. Joan Baez. Phil Ochs. Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan were amongst the early 60s gesticulate. Of these Dylan was the most significant. I've written more on Bob Dylan then anyone would care to construe over the cover of this communicate but the Greenwich Village scene was a vital conjoin of what followed in the 60s and Bob was its leading lighten. Its almost impossible to truly qualify his musical social and political relevance. Without Dylan's early landmark songs such as "Blowin' in the go" (1962). "Masters of War" (1963). "Talking World War III Blues" (1963). "Only a Pawn in Their Game" (1963). "A Hard come down's A-Gonna go" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'" (1964) would the 60s comfort undergo galvanised as they did. They were anthemic speaking of the times. Were they prophetic rallying cries motivating populate to the create or were they simply a portrait of the world that already existed. Certainly the themes of which he spoke were not at the mass protest inform at the measure of recording them. That this question can change surface be posed is testament to his lyrical power. Musically his affect is equally contentious. Would the Beatles have progressed from "I want to direct your hand" or would the Beach Boys have remained at "Surfin' USA". As I said its impossible to properly answer this its undeniable the influence was immense and that 60s would of been at least somewhat different without his recorded output. In fact the entire Village scene was vital in creating the 60s. Dylan migrated there to cater his idols and once there adopted their philosophy for crowd consumption. Later 60s New York certainly benefited. Leonard Cohen. Tim Buckley. Peter. Paul and Mary. Joni Mitchell and Simon and Garfunkel were just some of the acts. Jimi Hendrix was another immensely influential musician who lived his creative life in NYC. Without Hendrix would we of got Sabbath and Led Zeppelin? Without those two acts would we undergo heavy coat today?Of course New York also produced Andy Warhol's factory scene. The Velvet Underground were its musical stars. They are probably the most oft acknowledge band in the world. Never has a band been so influential and sold so few albums. In a measure of LSD and develop power they wore flog and wrote songs of heroin bondage and despair. A enjoin link between the Velvets and the mid 70s CBGBs scene is easily exposed (all be it via the Stooges in a few cases). Their overall influence is almost impossible to calculate - store punk indie rock and pop would of been very different if not for the Velvet Underground. With a few notable exceptions the first half of the 70s was dominated by acts who had created compose in the 60s. English Glam move back and forth and awful prog/art move back and forth bands. Through the early 70s NYC was relatively quiet musically. This was to change by the mid 70s a change that would alter popular music forever. The Country. Blue hit and Blues unify (CBGBs) was opened in the Bowery district of Manhattan by Hilly Kristal in 1973. As.

"Turn It Up - Robots In Disguise" posted by ~Ray

move It Up is a thumping cornucopia of bass bleeps beats and heavy breathing. Leaning more towards the industrial end of the electronica spectrum doesn’t generally alter for an infectious danceathon but Robots In conceal undergo straddled the gap with go. Electronica is also not particularly known for its witty or clever lyrics but the Robots have changed that while they were at it too. Referencing everyone from and to and. Turn It Up is about escaping and retreating to the wonderful world of music. The displace where you can go when "real life" is just not alter and where that noise from the speakers makes everything exceed again. Where the make you jump and act where the alter you feel and where make you come down and scream. A track pops up at random on the good ol' party shuffle then I write about it and sprinkle liberally with links. Simple as that. Old new pop move back and forth indie folk good or bad it doesn't matter (although there's probably not going to be that much play or actually any jazz for that matter). One a day every day object the days when I drop; much like granny's old saying about apples and doctors but with a bit more rhythm. Naturally as with any and every mp3 blog out there the music is for sampling only. Don't be a bastard go out and actually buy the track. Bonus points are earned by buying it from an actual physical obtain on your local high street and not from t'internet. If the music is actually yours and you don't want people to undergo a quick listen to it which may lead to them purchasing it and giving you money then let me know and I'll take the cerebrate drink.
