Kitty drove from Hampshire to Asheville or vice-versa nine times. I slept in Kitty at Sheetz stations in Scranton curled up in a hoodie with the doors locked in the light of the parking lot. I acquired her during my Worst Semester Ever spring 2004 at the end of which my dad drove her home with me curled up in the passenger seat; when I graduated. Becca and I drove home. 17 hours straight through and saw dozens of deer on the roadside in the middle of the night. Lots of stupid shit happened to that car. I ran down the crappy original battery in the first year I owned Kitty. The bumper got wrenched off by my and was ludicrously replaced with a new shiny one. You see. Kitty was already a beater car when I bought her; grungy and reliable and faded with a rusty bike rack on top. Kitty was never going to win any beauty contests especially after she But you know she had character or something. In the past year. I've spent a lot of time being annoyed at my car by no fault of her own. The Noble Corolla is not designed to accommodate a tallish adult and two carseated children on a full-time basis. I suffered a near-constant backache from scooching my driver's seat up to make room for Georgia's rear-facing baby bucket; the alternative carseat arrangement meant Gray would kick the back of my seat nonstop so I couldn't win. Even without the Kid Factor. I became tired of my car being a punchline albeit pretty much only to my own jokes. I couldn't complain- Kitty got me everywhere got great mileage even 130,000 miles into her long career and. I theorized would never die. This month. I started thinking seriously about replacing Kitty. One quirk of mine is that I may consider whether to do something big for a long time before mentioning it to anyone but once I've said anything it pretty much gets done like yesterday. So it was that I went from. "I think maybe I'll upgrade cars this summer," to "I think I'll go see what kind of loan I can get preapproved for," to "Hey! New car!" in perhaps two weeks. I was ready. And if I'd needed any sort of signal from the universe yesterday's Fish Sauce Incident was it. I picked up Thai takeout on the way home and set the bag of food- as I often do with fragile cargo- in the empty baby seat for the ride home. We weren't even out of the parking lot when the styrofoam box slid out of the bag sauce seeping out at an alarming rate onto my car's already jacked-up upholstery. By early this morning my car smelled like fish sauce. Lots of it. Like a dumpster full of sun-ripened Pad Thai. And you know it's only May and I live in North Carolina. It will get much hotter and much stinkier. So like I said it was time. Kitty did her job well and I got a little weepy as I emptied her of four years of detritus- CD cases and sour candy for carsickness and the hundreds of Cheerios Gray threw under the seats. It felt self-indulgent and maudlin even as I felt it but I am closer to 24 now than 23 and Kitty was- is- the car of my early 20s. When I drove aimlessly on the back roads of Western Massachusetts during that awful spring it was in this car and I was 19 a college junior and so heartbroken and so young. I bought a new car today. It's a 2007 Matrix- if nothing else. Kitty's longevity has made me a devoted Toyota driver and the Matrix is basically a roomier Corolla with a hatchback. My new car is also red but much shinier. I'm thinking of naming her Big Red after the head cheerleader from Bring It On. She is flawless and clean and comfortable and mine- no cosigner on this loan. Big Red is my first Grown-Up Car and I think I'm officially in my mid-20s. I took Pig with me. It seemed weird to leave Kitty alone but I wanted to hold onto her sidekick. Pig's a keeper.
